Charcoal comes in two main types: lump charcoal (carbonized pieces of wood) and compressed charcoal (charcoal powder pressed into a uniform shape). Each has its own strengths and uses, and this guide compares them so you can choose the right one for your business or market.
- Lump charcoal is natural wood pieces; compressed charcoal is a uniform shape made from pressed powder.
- Compressed charcoal is denser, so a container holds 27 tonnes versus 18 tonnes of lump.
- Hexagonal compressed charcoal burns for 5 to 6 hours.
- Compressed coconut cubes are the first choice for shisha.
- Lump charcoal is popular for grilling, retail and restaurants.
How each type is made
Lump charcoal: wood is carbonized in a closed kiln (ours has a 20-ton capacity and a 6-day cycle), then sorted and packed as pieces.
Compressed charcoal: carbonized raw material is ground, mixed with starch and natural non-chemical ingredients, pressed and cut, then dried until moisture is below 1% leaving the dryer. Details in how charcoal is made.

FAQ
Why does a container hold more compressed charcoal?
Compressed charcoal is denser and regular in shape, so the same weight takes less space.
Does compressed charcoal contain chemicals?
Our binder is starch with natural, non-chemical ingredients.
Can I use lump charcoal for shisha?
You can, but compressed coconut cubes give more even heat and less smoke, which is why they are standard for shisha.
